I have seen so many photos on my feed in regards to LPs Quality Meat that it was on my list of places to go when I was in Sydney. We came here for Dad’s birthday, he loves meat, and so does my bro and ‘The Mother’. LPs Quality Meat can be found in Chippendale and Luke Powell (ex-head chef at Tetsuya’s, ex-Mary’s and ex-Mugaritz in Spain) is the man behind this smokehouse and bar.  There’s an open kitchen (which I love) and you can see Luke carving up all the big chunks of meat.


The menu is split into cured and cold meats, smoked fish, smoked meats, vegetables and dessert. There is also a chef’s menu for groups of 6 or more, but we were keen on the a la carte. Started with the schmaltz, white anchovy toast (5 pp) – ‘The Mother’ thought the anchovy were a little on the salty side.

We all enjoyed the smoked ox tongue, thinly cut, the tongue was melt-in-your-mouth tender and delicious that you just wanted more.


Now for the mains – we couldn’t go past the beef short rib, half chicken, lamb belly stuffed with merguez and pork – seems a lot right, but for 5 for us, we ordered another serving of beef short rib and pork!


The beef short rib was definitely my favourite. It was deliciously tender and smoky, the meat comes off the bone easily and mum and I were both fighting on who can chew / gnaw on the bone itself! It had the right amount of fattiness, and it was SOOOO good that we couldn’t help but another serving!

The lamb was also a favourite for the diners, lamb belly around a Merguez sauce. Lamb isn’t my favourite meat, so this for me was just OK but I know everyone else thought it was fantastic.

The chicken had a wonderful aroma and flavour and Dragon couldn’t help but devour at least 1/4 of it by herself, she just wanted more.

The pork I love!!!! Crackle was so crunchy it was like music to my ears! The meat itself was also very tender.

We couldn’t help but order two servings of the mashed potato and gravy – sinfully creamy and smooth, a must order when you are here!

Unfortunately we didn’t order any desserts, we were so full that I had to discretely undo my shorts button! I have to say, the beef rib is definitely worth coming back for, next time it would just be the ribs and mash and I will be one happy girl!

A visit to Sydney is not a visit if I don’t catch up with one of my bridesmaid M! I have known this girl for a very long time and is one of my dearest friends! M suggested we go to Ester, which is a new-ish restaurant in Chippendale, backed by the guys behind Vini, Berta and 121BC. It’s run by Mat Lindsay and the sous chef is Nick Wong who is ex-Bodega.


The restaurant is a lot smaller than I thought, however, I thought it looked very similar to its sisters restaurant. I quite like the relax atmosphere and the vibe. The menu is quite vast, diners can choose from the snacks, small plates and woodfire section and everything sounded delicious. We weren’t sure what we wanted so opt for the set menus which are available for $62 or $89 per person. The $62 has about 7 courses – my goodness. M and I don’t usually go for set menus but we were determined that evening. The courses are chosen by the chef, however, we could choose it ourselves. Considering I had a nut allergy and couldn’t eat any seafood, we picked our own.

Whilst perusing the menu, we were served with some tasty crispy chickpeas which were lightly garnished with salt and rosemary – oh my… tasty! M started with some oysters ($3.5each) and she said they were good!


The la tur cheese was delicious, it’s a dense, creamy blend of pasteurized cow, goat and sheep milk. It was soft and goey and runny, and the mandarin and fennel really gave it a nice touch.


We both couldn’t resist the blood sausage ($6) and it was delish! The sauce was just incredible.


Now onto the small plates. Started with the polenta, corn and sage ($18) were deliciously creamy and sweet. It was hard not to lick the plate!


The pig tail, oyster and daikon ($20) – all sorts of wonderfulness on a plate!


We really enjoyed the tender duck which was served with pear and enoki ($19) – very light, very nice! The pear really complemented the duck well.


The woodfired section of the menu is the larger dishes on the menu. We started with the chicken, lemon, garlic ($26). The chicken was so tender that it just fell apart and melted in your mouth.


The lamb, yoghurt and coriander ($32) was surprisingly tasty and tender but it was a little too lamb-y for my liking. M really liked it though.


For dessert, we had the ice cream – salted caramel, fennel and chocolate. I have to say that my least favourite was fennel – it was just too weird for me. However, the salted caramel and chocolate were both really lovely. The chocolate was probably the winner for me, the salted caramel was a little too sweet.


We were both stuffed to the brim! Everything was delicious, my favourites would have to be the pork sausage, the polenta and the duck – seriously incredible! Would definitely be back to try their other dishes – especially the seafood ones.

Service was polite and friend, will definitely be back!

Brickfields is a new bakery in the backstreets of Chippendale. They make their own bread and supply the sourdough to Cornersmith, Love Tilly Devine and Flour & Stone. I love the feel of this café, it is quite small though, a few tables inside and outside and the menu is very limited and if you like variety, then you might struggle but I think there is always something for everyone.

We started with this wonderful drink which for the life of me can’t remember the name of. However, it was incredibly refreshing and delicious – even Dragon wanted some but it was a little too sweet for her.


I have heard wonderful things about their beef brisket sandwich with radish, anchovy mayonnaise and chili, unfortunately they don’t make that anymore. When asked why? They want to change the menu – spice it up a little. I can’t remember what they replaced it with but I couldn’t go past the egg, eggplant, tahini and zhoug on sourdough – OMG YUM! The bread was deliciously fresh and the zhoug – fantastic! My only gripe would be that it is a small serving, I would happily eat another serving!


‘The Mother’ couldn’t go past the chorizo, spiced cabbage and chili. It was good but mine was definitely better. The chorizo was nicely spice-y but the zhoug – oh my!


Service was efficient, I can imagine this place extremely busy on the weekend. We went on a weekday and we got the last table available. I have heard the coffee is also good but I am still on a non-drinking coffee ban. Oh wells, next time.

I have really missed the café scene in Sydney, will definitely be back for more when I am in town next.

The Duck Inn Pub and Kitchen, Chippendale

I remember going to Duck Inn a while ago, before its major face lift, I thought it was a very dodgy, blokey, seedy pub. However, the new renovations has that B&B or homey feel to it which I like. I love the rustic but yet modern furniture especially the bookcase wall paper – I had originally thought they were actually bookcases!

The Duck Inn can be found on Rose Street in Chippendale. The chef behind this pub is Chef Mitch Davis (ex-Blue Gum Hotel) and he has created a menu that is up-market pub grub which changes seasonally.

I was fortunate enough to visit the Duck Inn with Chloe Chun from PEPR Publicity.

Everything on the menu sounded wonderful, I couldn’t decide what I wanted but the deconstructed beef mushroom and ale pie with creamy mash, pea puree and puff pastry ($22) had my name on it.

The beef extremely tender and the puff pastry extremely flaky and crunchy!

I loved the creamy mash and pea puree – it was a hearty dish and perfect for winter.

Chloe couldn’t go past the beetroot ravioli with blue cheese ($19). I have never had beetroot ravioli and oh my, the colour of the ravioli was just beautiful. The blue cheese was subtle and complemented the beetroot ravioli – I was totally and utterly impressed. It was light and absolutely divine.

We also shared the roast pumpkin salad with rocket, goats cheese, toffee walnuts and honey balsamic ($16) – very colourful and incredibly tasty.

Unfortunately, I was too full for dessert, however, the sticky date pudding with toffee sauce and double cream sounds excellent. So does the chocolate and raspberry brulee – yum!

There is a beer garden at the back which is lovely for summer or spring when the weather is warmer. They have trivia on Monday nights, Uno on Tuesday nights from memory. It’s a great little pub in Chippendale, definitely worth checking out. No doubt we will be back for the food and trivia of course.

Freda’s Chippendale

There seems to be a lot of warehouse type restaurant opening up in Sydney, and Freda’s is one of them. Found on the busy street of Regent Street, near Cleveland Street. I was told to ‘look out for a giant red tongue of the PR agency nearby’, an alley way which will lead you to Freda’s.

Opened by Simon Cancio (ex Sean’s Panorama, Onde, Luxe and Bourke Street Bakery), ibrahim Kasif (ex Fish Face) and Marty Campaign. The three has opened this wonderful establishment – it’s very spacious, very cool and very NYC like.

I was catching up with the wonderful S, this was prior to me giving birth, a couple of days to be exact! We walked from Central Station – it wasn’t a long walk, probably about 10 – 15 minutes. Menu is written on the board, and food can vary daily. For dinner, there’s salads, some sort of protein and desserts.

We started with the pickled eggplants – thinly sliced, they were extremely sour but extremely good. It was incredibly tender and had the right amount of tang!

We were also given complimentary bread which was perfect to dip into the tangy sauce of the pickled eggplants.

I couldn’t go past the beef tongue – it was a generously large serving, more like a VERY large tongue which was served with salsa verde, onions and pickles. The salsa verde was a wonderful complement, I loved the pickles and the beef tongue was incredibly tender it just melted in my mouth. It was seriously tasty!

Now what we both wanted – the suckling pork was uber tender that again it fell apart. I was a little disappointed about the crackle though, I was hoping that it would be crunchier but no, it was quite soggy. The meat itself was wonderful, pity about the lack of crackle!

Unfortunately we were both way too full for dessert, they had chocolate cake but we really couldn’t fit anything else. I am keen to try their lunch though, their lunch sounds wonderful – pork, pickle and salsa verde, or even the duck, arugula, beetroot relish, or even meatballs and reggiano – YUM!!!!!

Definitely a cool hangout place, even if its just for drinks! Will be back to try their lunch menu.
