Fish and Meat, Central, Hong Kong

I have heard wonderful reviews about Fish and Meat, the latest venture from Maximal Concepts who are also behind Blue Butcher and Brickhouse. From memory, it is where Sal Curioso used to be. The restaurant is very cozy and welcoming; I love the polished concrete floors, white-washed walls and rustic wood tables.


Fish and Meat focuses ‘on the best produce and techniques, to deliver fresh seafood, homemade pasta and farm-to-table cooking’. We were here for lunch and the lunch menu consisted of small and large dishes as well as sides and sweets.

We started with some crispy whitebait with lemon aioli. The whitebait was deliciously crispy and the lemon aioli was a wonderful addition. It was so hard to stop at one.


I couldn’t go past the slow cooked Spanish Teruel pork belly porchetta ciabatta / pork fennel sausage stuffing / gremolata. Oh my, one of the nicest sandwich I have had in a long time – the pork belly were incredibly tender, the rocket and the gremolata was a wonderful complement – the lemon zest gave it a nice kick!


The saffron risotto / crispy sea bream / scallop / squid / prawn were deliciously creamy! I loved the colour of the saffron risotto – so vibrant!


The free range warm French chicken salad / pancetta / arugula / cherry tomato / cherry tomato / basil were deliciously light and refreshing. Dragon absolutely loved the chicken and not to mention the croutons!


The cedar prime sirloin steak was cooked to perfection. It was served with celery truffle salad and roasted tomatoes.


We were quite stuffed so didn’t order any desserts, however, I am definitely keen to come back for the dinner menu. I have heard wonderful things about the slow cooked Spanish Teruel pork belly porchetta that I really need to get some in my belly!

Aberdeen Street, Soho, Hong Kong

Aberdeen Street is located in Soho, just below Caine Road and the restaurant is a unique combination of bar and restaurant. It has quite a relaxing atmosphere and I love the outdoor terrace area as it is absolutely relaxing and perfect for a hot summer day with a glass of wine or beer. The menu is vast and a good one at that, it took us a while to decide what we wanted.


Whilst deciding what we all want to eat, we started with the vegetarian croquette (HKD 58) – rice bowl with carrots and mushrooms for the kids. Crispy exterior, the vegetarian croquettes were delicious and even Dragon managed to eat two on her own.


The garlic shrimp (HKD58) were panfried with garlic and white wine and were plump and juicy


We also had the veggie touch (HKD248) to share – vegetarian samosa, spring roll, mini veggie burger, vegetarian croquette, garden bouquet, beetroot and pumpkin frites. The cheese spring rolls were indeed cheesy and not too oily. I didn’t have any of the veggie burger but was told that it was delicious. The beetroot and pumpkin frites were not what I expected though, I was hoping for thin slices of pumpkin fried, but it was slightly over battered making it a little too chewy.


I opt for ‘just a disaster’ (HKD 148) – omelet with ham, cheese, mushroom, provencal tomatoes, sausage, sautéed potatoes and salad. The sausage Dragon demolished, so I assume it was good! ha! The omelet was light and fluffy.


‘The Mother’ couldn’t go past the tenderloin (HKD228) which was served with sautéed vegetables and sautéed potatoes. The beef was cooked to perfection and it was incredibly tender and absolutely delicious. I definitely had food envy!


J had the pan-fried salmon, sautéed vegetables, basmati rice and caper, saffron and cream sauce (HKD178). I didn’t have any of this but she did say it was good and the salmon wasn’t over cooked.


The salad menu is extensive and everything sounded wonderful. S had the staunton street (HKD158) salad – avocado, asparagus, prawns, egg sunny side up, mushroom, soya and basmati rice. It looked divine and S did say it was excellent. Everything was fresh and he demolished everything!


Service was friendly and polite, definitely would be keen to come back to eat the salad – wonder if they do take away as it would be great to have it for lunch!

Little Bao, Central, Hong Kong

I have wanted to go to Little Bao ever since I saw the famous fried bun sandwiched between green tea ice cream dripping with condensed milk on my instagram feed – my goodness! What’s not to like?!?!?


Located on Staunton Street, this place is TINY!! You can’t miss it, there will be a long queue outside and a cute ginormous neon face. We rocked up at about 6.45pm and was told there was a 30 mins wait. You could probably fit about 20 people in the restaurant, all bar stools (thank goodness I didn’t bring Dragon with me!) and the menu consists of small plates that are for sharing, along with seasonal specials and four types of boas – pork belly, chicken, fish tempura, and a vegetarian mushroom-centric option.


The gorgeous S was in town and I suggested this place and we both perused the menu and knew exactly what we wanted! We started with Mac and Cheese (HKD108). Oh my… the aroma of this dish, it was divine and we both couldn’t wait to dig in. What’s different about this mac and cheese is that May uses cheung fan (rice rolls) instead of macaroni and it was generously covered with a layer of mentaiko cheese sauce! we couldn’t stop eating this dish!


Next came the orange chicken (HKD98) which if fried chicken coated in salty egg yolk, honey glazed with orange zest. OH my… possibly my new favourite kind of fried chicken!


We could’t go past the signature pork belly bao (HKD78) – the pork belly was melt-in-your-mouth tender, I loved the red onion salad and the bun was one of the softest bun I have had in a long time.


May, the owner thought that this was probably enough for us, unfortunately our eyes were bigger than our stomach so we ordered the special bao which was orange chicken with slaw, cucumber and sauce was good but not as good as the pork belly one. By this stage we were both TOO full.


However, we couldn’t go past the Little Bao Ice cream sandwich (HKD48) – which is essentially green tea ice cream sandwiched between two deep fried boas and my goodness – pure brilliant! It was incredible and if I wasn’t too full, I am pretty sure I could have eaten one on my own! It was SO GOOD!


Service was quite quick and having May explain to you the menu was good. I really did enjoy my meal but I am not sure if I would wait 90 mins though. At about 7.30pm, I overheard that the wait could be up to 90 mins! That’s a long time. Thankfully you can leave your number and they will call you once the table is available.

It was so lovely catching up with S, I have indeed missed you!

Brasserie Kämp, Helsinki

Traveling is all about sightseeing, shopping, food and experiences. For me, most importantly would be the food! If the food was terrible, I think it would make the whole experience less enjoyable. Ok there has been some trips where I have done absolutely no research on food but I have managed to find little restaurant gems or markets that serve awesome snacks! Regardless, ‘The Mother’ knows that it has to some how revolve around food! Brasserie Kamp can be found on the main shopping drag of Helsinki. It is part of the Hotel Kamp and it has been open and serving breakfast, lunch, dinner for 100 years. The restaurant was a little more fancier than I thought but then again I wasn’t sure what to expect.


Uncle pointed out on instagram that someone had gone here to have a burger. Judging from the picture, the burger looked sensational so I had to go and try it. We started with some bread, oddly Dragon loved rye and would not stop eating it.


The lunch menu was vast but I couldn’t go past the Kamp burger – 140g grilled fillet of beef, chipotle and bacon dressing, tomato, caramelised onions, cheddar, lettuce served with a side of french fries! At 33 Euros it wasn’t a cheap burger so I had HIGH expectations! It did not disappoint, the beef patty was tender, the bun soft and it had the right amount of salad and sauces!  And the chips were a wonderful addition.


‘The Mother’ encouraged me to try the sautéed reindeer meat with potato puree, lingonberries and fried onions with juniper berries. Now I had no idea what to expect. ‘The Mother’ had eaten reindeer prior to meeting me and said that it was tasty! I kind of felt sorry for poor little rudolf! The reindeer meat were a little gamey for my liking – it was tender but I didn’t like the after taste, even eaten with the ligonberries. The potato puree however, LOVED! Creamy and sinful!


There’s also a kids menu which is awesome. Dragon had some pasta and chicken which she loved. Service was friendly and food came out relatively quickly. ‘The Mother’ wanted to come back again for the burger but I managed to persuade him to try other restaurants!

Donka, Central, Hong Kong

Donka can be found on the 11th floor of 11 Stanley Street. I am not even sure what the name of the building is but I have definitely tried most of the restaurants there. Donka is a fusion restaurant – Japanese and Chinese to be exact. I’m not usually a fan of fusion, too much going on in the dishes and I’m always left a little underwhelmed. A colleague of mine wanted to give it ago so we went.


The restaurant is tiny, but then again the entire restaurant in the building is small, no more than 40 diners.  The layout is quite simple and diners have the option of 8 different type of set menu which also includes drink.

I couldn’t go past the rice with Thai green curry and honey grilled pork chops. The honey grilled pork chops were deliciously tender with the right amount of sweetness. The Thai green curry was a little spicy which gave it a nice kick.


J couldn’t go past Chinese homemade pork belly with rice. I almost ordered this too and it looked fantastic!! I couldn’t help but steal a piece and it had the right amount of fat and meat ratio.


C had the tomato soup inaniwa udon with fried egg and meat (fried fish) and he was highly disappointed. The soup was tasteless and the fried fish was tiny compared to the rest of ours.



Service efficient, however I thought it was a bit odd that our food did not arrive at the same time. From memory mine came last so I was watching them eat for a while. I was pleasantly surprised with my dish but I don’t think C did. Oddly I have not returned since, however, I have been to the other restaurants in that building.
