Papi Chulo, Manly, Australia

Sorry for the lack of post! Am finally in Sydney and enjoying the somewhat cooler weather! It’s so good to be back, catching up with family and friends – oh I have missed you all! The cool change is definitely welcoming, not to mention the space and fresh air!

Papi Chulo is the ‘newish’ establishment by the Merivale empire. It is located in Manly, just over looking the Manly wharf .The space is bright and spacious, and there are both booth seating with high bench tables and stools. I have wanted to try this new place ever since it opened, and rightly so, as soon as we got to Sydney, I had to try. I wanted to try everything on the menu, snacks, smoked bbq, you name it, everything!

We started with the pea guacamole with tortilla chips (AUD14) – the pea guacamole was deliciously smooth, and Dragon couldn’t help but lick her spoon every time I give it to her. The tortilla chips we also adored and it was a wonderful complement.

We opt for the Papi Chulo BBQ Plater – half rack of lamb ribs, 150gm each of wagyu brisket, pulled pork and pork belly platter served with pickles and soft bread (AUD86). This was definitely a winner for every one!

My favourite was definitely the wagyu brisket, it was incredibly tender and succulent that I wanted more.

The pork belly and the pulled pork were also fantastic. Melt in your mouth and I love the flavour of the pulled pork.

My least favourite was probably the lamb ribs, it had quite a strong lamb taste in my opinion but my fellow dining companion enjoyed it.

Lastly, we ordered the curly fries, oh my my… crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. It was fantastic and i couldn’t help but polished the plate, including Dragon.

We also had a side of Vietnamese Coleslaw (AUD8) which was refreshing and perfect with the meat fest we were having for lunch.

Unfortunately, that’s all we had as there were only 3 of us. I really wanted to try the burger and the bone marrow. I guess I just have to go back for more! Service was polite and friendly and food came relatively quickly. If only we lived closer to Manly – I could get my wagyu brisket fix every single week!

Tapas at Miss Marley’s, Manly

It certainly has been a while since ‘The Mother’ and I caught up with P and his lovely wife, C. So when P suggested we have dinner in Manly, we thought great! Manly is one suburb we don’t venture to often, P and C are the only friends we know that lives there. In Summer, we would go to Manly once or twice, ride the ferry and enjoy the sun but besides that, never.

P suggested we go to Miss Marley’s, tapas place in Manly. He has been to this restaurant a number of times now, and had some wonderful meals. It’s quite a small but yet funky restaurant. Apparently they have taken on the ‘small bar concept where 1950’s style vintage glam meets the passion of Central and South America’. I love the mix design and quirky features of this place. It’s very cozy, casual and extremely relaxing.

Considering P has been here a number of times, thought we would leave the ordering to him.

We started with the grilled eggplant salad and marjoram vinaigrette ($14). The eggplant was thinly sliced and grilled – I love grilled eggplant. It was tender and moist and the marjoram vinaigrette was a combination of sweet and sour which was a wonderful complement to the grilled eggplant. I’m not usually a fan of eating onions unless it is barbequed to a crisp, however, it was blanched with the marjoram vinaigrette and was surprisingly good. It was refreshingly light and absolutely delicious.

Next, the spice baked squid filled with a crisp jamon and kiplfer potato salad ($17). Baked squid with kipler potato salad inside – it was absolutely wonderful. The squid was tender, and the potatoes were cut into bite size pieces. The flavours were amazing and well executed which I thoroughly enjoyed.

P has raved about the next dish, and I can see why! Aji de Gallina for 2, Peruvian curry of turmeric, chilli and chickin served with wild rice and black beans. Shredded chicken with curry, which were extremely flavourful and the hint of chilli really gave it that nice kick.

The wild rice and black beans were different but were great complements to the curry. I especially loved the black beans.

I’m not usually a huge fan of lamb but the garlic and paprika lamb for 2 with saffron quinoa filled zucchini and sofrito paste ($27) was fantastic! It didn’t have that strong lamb flavour, and served medium rare was incredibly tender and incredibly succulent. The zucchini with saffron quinoa and sofrito paste was just magnificent. I would have been happy to eat just the zucchini. I did like the combination of the zucchini and lamb!

Lastly, quesadilla with mozzarella, goat cheese and oregano with raspberry chilli jam ($11). The photo really doesn’t do any justice – sorry about that! But this was superb! Toasted tortilla and oozy cheese topped with raspberry chilli jam with a side of guacamole and sour cream – need I say more? Probably one of the best quesadilla I have had for a long time!

The drinks menu was quite extensive, ranging from wine, beer, cocktails and margaritas. If you are not up for food, you can always just have a drink at Miss Marley’s drinking margaritas.

It’s a great find and thanks for recommending it P! It was wonderful food amongst friends, what more can you asks for?

It was wonderful catching up with both of you, let’s do it again sometime soon!

Home cooked meal @ Manly with Mr P

Most of you have heard about P, the guy who came up with the name of this blog! We met a while back at soccer, a good 5 – 6 years now. He now lives in Manly, with his wife, C and child, T. C also loves her food. Both P and C used to live in Hong Kong, for a good 1.5 years and have the low down on places to eat.

I didn’t get to see P the last time I was in Sydney, we were both too busy and couldn’t find time. This time though, I was keen to see them and catch up and see T again.

We had dinner at their new place in Manly, caught a ferry there. I was a little worried, as I get motion sickness, however, the ride was short enough, 15 mins to be exact so I didn’t get sick. Whilst waiting for P, I managed to take a photo of the Sydney Harbour at night…

Their house – one word – AMAZING! It could be my ‘dream house’, they have my dream kitchen that’s for sure, an island in the middle of the kitchen where you can prepare your food or it could even turn into casual eating area. Their house is big enough for the three of them, plus more, it’s overlooking the harbor, which would be fantastic for New Years Eve. It was just incredible!

Now, baby T, he has grown! Last time I saw him was in Chicago last year, he was still a baby, he is no longer baby anymore – he is a grown up boy! Cute, adorable and extremely talkative, well baby talk that is!

P and C decided to cook dinner for me, which was seriously very kind of them! They made Moroccan chicken with couscous and it was sensational. The Moroccan Chicken was tender, succulent, full of flavour. It had a nice sweetness flavour from the sultana and a nice tang from the lemon and yogurt. It was definitely yummy. Even T enjoyed the chicken!

The couscous was a great compliment, it was soft and delicious.

It was a fantastic meal with two of my dearest friends, P and C. They are indeed fantastic chef. We ended the meal with creamy vanilla ice cream and strawberries. It was light and definitely tasty.

I don’t get to see P and C very often now that I am in Hong Kong. I am looking forward to seeing all three of them in Hong Kong soon! C, I think we should do a couple of high teas whilst you are there. I do look forward to it!

P wanted me to rate his cooking and P, it was the best meal that week! It was cooked with lots of love! As much as I enjoy dining out, nothing beats a nice home cooked meal with friends!

It was great catching up with you both, and I do look forward to seeing you next week and in Hong Kong!

I am sure Hubby would have enjoyed dinner!
