Yong Jing’s Kitchen Enlightened, Kingsford

I was catching up with my parents for lunch and suggested we go to Kingsford, as it would be easier to park than Chinatown. I wasn’t going to suggest Indonesian food, Mum’s a great cook and every time I take her to one of the restaurants on Anzac Parade she would complain. Lesson learnt, and never again.

So, I suggested Chinese food, and thought of Yong Jing’s Kitchen, which was recommended by one of her friends. It can be found on the busy strip of Anzac Parade, near all the Indonesian eateries. The restaurant was busy when we rocked up just a little past midday.

The menu was vast, lots of variety, they also had daily specials – $10.90 for a variety of dishes which was served with rice. Mum and I couldn’t go past this deal and picked two from the menu.

I am a true sucker for sweet and sour pork, I seem to order it every time I see it on the menu. Unfortunately, the sweet and sour pork here was a little disappointing. It looked good but it was a little soggy and the pork was a little hard. They don’t make sweet and sour pork like they do in Hong Kong – that’s for sure.

We also got a serve of mixed vegetable with bean curd in hot pot. The vegetables were incredibly salty, but the bean curd itself was surprisingly good.

Dad loves congee, chicken congee to be exact. I had secretly hoped he wanted the pork and thousand year old egg, but alas no. It was indeed a generous serving, unfortunately we didn’t finish it. It wasn’t too watery or salty and had generous amount of chicken pieces.

We did take away some fried rice, and it was indeed a fantastic! It had that lovely wok aroma which I loved and a lovely spice to give it that extra kick. I think the fried rice was probably the highlight!

I did notice a few people order laksa or noodles, seems like it was the most popular thing to order.

Service was friendly, and food came relatively quickly. I do like the name of though – Yong Jing’s Kitchen Enlightened. However, not sure if I was ‘enlightened’.
