Pho Toan Thang, Flemington

Family gatherings, I love them more and more as I get older. I was catching up with the family for lunch, Dad was craving for Pho and I needed my fried chicken with tomato rice fix. It’s been a while since the family went to Flemington, so suggested it. I have heard wonderful things about Pho Toan Thang, which is located in the ‘alley’ way near the car park. I was told by fellow readers that I should have gone here instead of Saigon Pho.

We rocked up a bit after midday, there were no queue but inside was almost full, one table left for us. When we came out about 40 mins later, there were people waiting. Turnover is quick though, and it seemed like the line was moving relatively quickly.

Dad had the combination beef pho – combination of beef, beef balls, tripes and tendons. I love the soup, personally I thougt it was better than that of Saigon Pho, it had a lot more flavours and was more tastier but then again, I am no pho expert. However, Dad still claims the ‘one in Cabramatta’ is better – I am not sure which restaurant he was referring too as he too didn’t remember the name – he just said ‘the one’ in Cabramatta.

Mum opted for the vermecilli with pork chop served with what I assume is a darker version of sweet and sour chili sauce. It’s not a hot dish (except for the pork chop that is). The vermecili is at room temperature, and served with blanched cucumber and carrots, it was surprisingly light and refreshing. I am not a huge fan of vermecilli, I know it’s a stupid reason, but it’s just too thin and doesn’t have enough ‘bite’ but I know Mum loves this dish. The pork chop was fantastic! Lightly battered, and juicy. It was almost as good as my fried chicken… almost!

My brother, F, had the fried pork chop with tomato rice. Another classic and a favourite of ours. He devoured this, I didn’t have any of the fried rice, but the pork chop was again excellent.

I always order the same thing – fried chicken with tomato rice. I don’t know why, but it is something I always get. I asked the waiter if I could have ‘less rice’ – he nodded and when my dish came, I received TWO servings of chicken with NO rice! My goodness – talk about chicken over load. Definitely did not finish this, it was just too much. The chicken was excellent, I loved the crispy thin (yet fatty) skin and the meat, was scrumptiously good!

O, my sis-in-law had something similar to Mum. She opted for the vermecilli with fried chicken. I can safely assume she enjoyed the fried chicken as she too demolished it.

The service is friendly and efficient, so don’t be put off by the long queues. They do have a quick turnover – in and out within 30 minutes! Our dish costs between $9 – $11, and my two serves of chicken is $9 and I was stuffed and probably won’t eat a fried chicken in a while!

Thanksfor the suggestions! I can truly understand the long queues. As Cabrammatta is too far, this may well be our ‘regular’ for our Vietnamese fix.

‘The Mother’ loves pho and is on the hunt for the best pho in Sydney.

I am not much of a pho-lover, I am more of a crispy fried chicken with red tomato rice lover.

One weekend, ‘The Mother’ and I decide to go to Flemington – not that far from where we live but its not a place we go very often. Its been such a long time since we last visited Flemington that we weren’t sure which restaurant to try. So ‘The Mother’ suggested we scope out each restaurant and pick the busiest one and go from there.

Sure enough, Saigon Pho or as the shop says Saigon BBQ was the busiest one.

Started with coconut juice – this was way too sweet for me, but ‘The Mother’ loved it. It was refreshing and the young coconut pieces were tender and wonderful. Pity the juice was too sickly sweet.

‘The Mother’ couldn’t go pass the special noodle soup – which consits of beef, beef balls, tendons, and tripes. I am not sure why he orders the special as he never ever eats the tendons or the tripes. All pho comes with a plate of bean sprouts and mint leaves – I am not a fan of mint leaves, but ‘The Mother’ certainly loves them and puts them all in his soup.

The meat is usually half raw but will eventually cook in the hot soup. The beef were tender, and the soup absolutely delicious. According to ‘The Mother’ it is one of the best pho he has had for a while. I did enjoy the soup, very aromatic and full of flavour and the tripes and tendons were succulent and excellent.

I couldn’t go pass the crispy fried chicken and tomato rice – my usual! It was a generous serving of chicken on a mountain of rice. The fried chicken glistened, crispy thin skin and tender succulent meat. It was fantastically good and exactly what I needed that day. Unfortunately, I didn’t finish the rice – it was just way TOO much.

Cravings satisfied we wondered around Flemington and bought more snacks! ‘The Mother’ couldn’t go pass the bahn mi – which we later had for dinner.

In order to help ‘the mother’ for the best pho – where do you think is the best pho in Sydney? We haven’t been to Pho An for a while but I do remember him saying that it was the best pho in Sydney.
