Oddies Foodies, Wan Chai, Hong Kong

Firstly, Merry Christmas! Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas with family, friends and your loved ones. Hope Santa was very kind to all of you!

I have seen photos of this wonderful dessert on instagram that I had to give it ago.

It took a while, but finally made it and it did not disappoint. Oddies can be found in Wan Chai, just off Wan Chai Road. The shop itself was pretty small, no sitting area and you could probably fit about 3 people in there.\

They offer either a normal cone with their signature 2 flavours (dark chocolate / original) or a mix or you can go something more elaborate (and expensive) option which includes night wolf, dr.oddie or mont blanc or just fusion eggettes.

We opt for the night wolf (HKD49) – italian low fat soft gelato twisted with 66% dark chocolate served with buttery crumbles, caramelised banana ice cream, passion fruit panna cotta, brownie and chocolate chips eggettes and crunchy flakes. ohhh eeemmm geeeeee. My goodness – this was definitely for two people, I doubt I could finish it on my own. The brownie and chocolate chips eggettes were too die for, it was served warm and absolutely fantastic. The mix soft gelato of vanilla and dark chocolate was a little on the rich side but it was good. Everything worked, including the caramelised banana, and passion fruit panna cotta.

Dragon and I shared the mix – milk and dark chocolate, large cone (HKD27) and it was good. Again i thought the chocolate itself was on the rich side, but the blend of both was seriously tasty.

Great dessert place, pity there’s nowhere to sit but we managed to find a park where we could sit and eat our ice cream. It was seriously good and definitely worth going back to try their other desserts!

I heard about this place from my friend thesuzchef, her husband went to high school with the owner of Via Tokyo – who also owns Ramen Jo and Haven. I love everything matcha! Via Tokyo specialises in matcha and milk ‘soft cream’ along with traditional Japanese desserts. Via Tokyo can be found on the busy street of Leighton Road, and the place is TINY – you can possibly sit about 12 people max?

I’ve been here a couple of times now and every time it has been excellent. Mind you – I pretty much get the same thing every single time! Without fail, I always get the fruit matcha with shiratama amitsu. The green tea matcha is definitely one of the best I have had in Hong Kong. I have yet to go to Sweets house cha cha so I can’t compare but I really do like the matcha.

‘The Mother’ had the original – soft cream anmitsu and although it is indeed creamy I do prefer the green tea matcha. It is infinitely better.

I’ve also tried the green tea latte… LOVE! The place does get extremely busy, we have been lucky as we have been coming here off peak so only had to wait 5 – 10 minutes for a table. I am not sure if I would wait for 90 mins for a table though! Take away would be a better option. No doubt will be back – Dragon really enjoyed it also!

Feast is the hotel restaurant at Island East which is located in Taikoo Shing. I have been here a couple of times, and have been rather impressed both times.  Not to mention, Island East hotel has a pretty cool rooftop bar called Sugar which is stunning at night.

The restaurant is very spacious and I LOVE the glass windows which gives the restaurant natural light. ‘The Mother’ and I were here for lunch, a very late lunch. There’s buffet or a la carte, and we both opt for the latter. The menu was vast, and it ranges from Asian and Western. You name it, they had it – fried rice, Hainan chicken rice, burgers, salads and many more. We started with some bread – I do love good fresh bread!

‘The Mother’ couldn’t go past the Hainan Chicken rice, and it was the MOST EXPENSIVE Hainan Chicken rice he has ever had. The presentation was excellent and it was delicious, however, at HKD200+, I think it was pricey for what it is.

I on the other hand was craving a burger – beef burger with bacon and cheese with salad on the side and fries. The pattie was tender and with melted cheese and bacon, it was a pretty excellent burger and it was cheaper than ‘The Mother’s’ Hainan Chicken rice! It was exactly what I needed that day, and even Dragon has some of the pattie.

We came back here a few weeks later, to try the afternoon tea buffet. Choices of sandwiches, salads, dim sum, waffles and crepes.

The dessert station had a lot of option; unfortunately most of them had nuts in them which were a shame. Probably a good thing, which meant that I couldn’t eat a lot of them!

My first plate consisted of Caesar salad, ham cheese and mustard on focaccia, sundried tomato and tahini on toast, and char siu bau. My second plate was very similar.

‘The Mother’ opt for wonton noodles, which was pretty tasty.

For dessert, I opt for the healthier option of fruits and some bread and butter pudding which I couldn’t resist.

Service was excellent, and food was pretty good. I do however prefer the a la carte menu as I can never eat too much at buffet and feel that I never get my money’s worth. However, in saying that, the buffet was about HKD300 including drinks which wasn’t too bad.

‘The Mother’ definitely enjoyed it, and so did Dragon.

Dragon’s 1st Birthday

I can’t believe that Dragon is one years old! Where did the past 12 months go? On the weekend, we celebrated Dragon’s birthday. It was really more for the adults than her really, an excuse for the adults to have a get together and eat good food, and indeed we did have good food!

I’d like to thank Angie, who made Dragon’s brilliant birthday cake! I think when I first asked her about it, she was a little shocked or sceptical. I am pretty sure she thought I was MAD! She wanted me to make balls of cakes? But she was brilliant, and I was SO happy with the end result so THANK YOU again! It was absolutely delicious also!

My favourite dessert, kelepon which a dear friend of mum’s made! I love these!!! Can’t remember how many of these I ate, but definitely enough to go to the gym every single day (twice a day) this week!

There were plenty other desserts which I forgot to take photos off, including pudding and other Indonesian desserts! And of course, the birthday girl’s cake – chocolate mud cake! It was absolutely superb! The reaction on Dragon’s face was unforgettable and absolutely epic! It was the reaction that we all wanted, so many thanks again Angie for the awesome cake!

Modern China, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong

I have been to Modern China a couple of times now – so will combine both visits in the one post. Founded in 2002, I first went to Modern China about 2 years ago, the Tai Kok Tsui location in Olympian City and enjoyed it. I didn’t realise that they opened one in Times Square, Causeway Bay until my dear high school friend took me there. Located on the 10th floor of Times Square, we rocked up at about 1pm and thankfully we didn’t have to wait for very long – 15 minutes max?

The restaurant was quite spacious, cold – temperature wish, décor was a little cheesy I thought – not very modern at all! Menu was vast! It took us a while to decide what to order, but left all the ordering to my M.

We started with the golden tea smoked eggs (HKD15 each) – oh my, these babies were deliciously smoke-y and cooked to perfection.

The shredded cucumber salad (HKD38) was refreshingly light and a little spicy which gave it a nice kick.

I couldn’t stop eating these delicious moreish, fat and juicy prawn and vegetable dumplings.

We both couldn’t go past the jung-bor style pork (2 pieces for $68) – OH MY GOD is all I can say. Tender, juicy pork, it was fatty, it was soft, it was calorific, but it was good! So good that I could probably eat two portions on my own!

Came back with the family about 1 month later and because my dear cousin was in town. He wanted the golden tea smoked eggs – we all got one but I am pretty sure he ate more than his share J

The sizzling beef with Beijing leek (HKD88) was good but nothing special I thought.

We ordered the sliced fish in spiced sauce (HKD126) and indeed it was spicy but it wasn’t as spicy as I had hoped. It didn’t leave that tingly sensation on my tongue but the fish were incredibly tender.

We couldn’t go past the mouthful small steamed meat buns aka xiao long bau (8 pieces for HKD46) – perfect!

The chefs special fried rice (HKD88) was good, I love the pork floss on top!

And no doubt we ordered the jung-bor style pork also. Service was a bit of a hit and miss. Very minimal but food was reasonably good. We didn’t have dessert at Modern China, but we did have dessert elsewhere.

We ended up at Tsui Yuen Dessert at North Point, one of the many branches and I couldn’t go past the mango sago dessert – possibly my favourite dessert.

However, we also got the black sesame ‘dumplings’ in ginger – my favourite! The strong ginger gives it that nice kick and I love black sesame – so win win!

Overall a great evening of food, I hope you had a great time in Hong Kong dear cousin, come back soon!
