LPs Quality Meat, Chippendale

I have seen so many photos on my feed in regards to LPs Quality Meat that it was on my list of places to go when I was in Sydney. We came here for Dad’s birthday, he loves meat, and so does my bro and ‘The Mother’. LPs Quality Meat can be found in Chippendale and Luke Powell (ex-head chef at Tetsuya’s, ex-Mary’s and ex-Mugaritz in Spain) is the man behind this smokehouse and bar.  There’s an open kitchen (which I love) and you can see Luke carving up all the big chunks of meat.


The menu is split into cured and cold meats, smoked fish, smoked meats, vegetables and dessert. There is also a chef’s menu for groups of 6 or more, but we were keen on the a la carte. Started with the schmaltz, white anchovy toast (5 pp) – ‘The Mother’ thought the anchovy were a little on the salty side.

We all enjoyed the smoked ox tongue, thinly cut, the tongue was melt-in-your-mouth tender and delicious that you just wanted more.


Now for the mains – we couldn’t go past the beef short rib, half chicken, lamb belly stuffed with merguez and pork – seems a lot right, but for 5 for us, we ordered another serving of beef short rib and pork!


The beef short rib was definitely my favourite. It was deliciously tender and smoky, the meat comes off the bone easily and mum and I were both fighting on who can chew / gnaw on the bone itself! It had the right amount of fattiness, and it was SOOOO good that we couldn’t help but another serving!

The lamb was also a favourite for the diners, lamb belly around a Merguez sauce. Lamb isn’t my favourite meat, so this for me was just OK but I know everyone else thought it was fantastic.

The chicken had a wonderful aroma and flavour and Dragon couldn’t help but devour at least 1/4 of it by herself, she just wanted more.

The pork I love!!!! Crackle was so crunchy it was like music to my ears! The meat itself was also very tender.

We couldn’t help but order two servings of the mashed potato and gravy – sinfully creamy and smooth, a must order when you are here!

Unfortunately we didn’t order any desserts, we were so full that I had to discretely undo my shorts button! I have to say, the beef rib is definitely worth coming back for, next time it would just be the ribs and mash and I will be one happy girl!

Sorry for the lack of post! Am finally in Sydney and enjoying the somewhat cooler weather! It’s so good to be back, catching up with family and friends – oh I have missed you all! The cool change is definitely welcoming, not to mention the space and fresh air!


Papi Chulo is the ‘newish’ establishment by the Merivale empire. It is located in Manly, just over looking the Manly wharf .The space is bright and spacious, and there are both booth seating with high bench tables and stools. I have wanted to try this new place ever since it opened, and rightly so, as soon as we got to Sydney, I had to try. I wanted to try everything on the menu, snacks, smoked bbq, you name it, everything!

We started with the pea guacamole with tortilla chips (AUD14) – the pea guacamole was deliciously smooth, and Dragon couldn’t help but lick her spoon every time I give it to her. The tortilla chips we also adored and it was a wonderful complement.


We opt for the Papi Chulo BBQ Plater – half rack of lamb ribs, 150gm each of wagyu brisket, pulled pork and pork belly platter served with pickles and soft bread (AUD86). This was definitely a winner for every one!

My favourite was definitely the wagyu brisket, it was incredibly tender and succulent that I wanted more.


The pork belly and the pulled pork were also fantastic. Melt in your mouth and I love the flavour of the pulled pork.


My least favourite was probably the lamb ribs, it had quite a strong lamb taste in my opinion but my fellow dining companion enjoyed it.


Lastly, we ordered the curly fries, oh my my… crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. It was fantastic and i couldn’t help but polished the plate, including Dragon.


We also had a side of Vietnamese Coleslaw (AUD8) which was refreshing and perfect with the meat fest we were having for lunch.


Unfortunately, that’s all we had as there were only 3 of us. I really wanted to try the burger and the bone marrow. I guess I just have to go back for more! Service was polite and friendly and food came relatively quickly. If only we lived closer to Manly – I could get my wagyu brisket fix every single week!

BBQ King, Chinatown

I’ve had many meals at BBQ King, mainly at some godly hour after a night of drinking and dancing. Mind you, this was in my younger days, as I no longer dance or drink the night away – it is a sign of OLD age! I have many fond memories of this place, at uni for a quick lunch, or for a midnight snack. I seemed to have enjoyed the midnight snacks more, being drunk, everything just taste so much better!

‘The Mother’ and I weren’t drunk when we went, it has been a VERY long time since my last visit to BBQ King,  four years maybe? The last time I was here, was probably after drinks with the boys and MG, one of our friends who love Chinese food suggested we get peking duck at BBQ King.

The place hasn’t changed really, the 1980s decor, the tanks of fresh seafood (not that I have seen anyone take a fish out of there!), the tables and chairs – it’s all pretty much the same!

We started with the complimentary pork soup. It lacked flavour, but then again, I wasn’t expecting much.

‘The Mother’ couldn’t go past the soy chicken – one of his favourite dishes and I have to say, it was pretty darn good. Tender succulent chicken with the right amount of sweetness to it. I have to admit, it wasn’t as good as the one in Hong Kong, but it did hit the spot! We both pretty much demolished this.

The fried whiting wasn’t too bad either, crispy, and not oily. Generous serving as we definitely couldn’t finish it.

We really wanted the snow peas but ran out, so opt for the spinach, it was good but nothing special and from memory expensive for what it is!

Overall, it wasn’t too bad, but on the pricier side! From memory, the whole meal costs $70+!! Service very minimal, staff needs to ‘smile’ more but food did come out quite quickly. Not a place I would go every day, I think there are better Chinese restaurants around, but I have to say, I’ve had some pretty awesome drunken meals here!

It certainly has been a while since my last visit to Madang, there is usually a large group of people lining and it’s the queue that makes me walk away. However, we (the family and I) were all craving Korean food and was determined to get a table. We arrived at about 6pm on a Saturday evening, and 25 minutes later we were seated!

I left all the ordering to my brother F, and as soon as we ordered, the banchan were served. Kimchee, grated daikon, potatoes salad, fish cake salad and seaweed salad. My favourite was definitely the kimchee and I love how it was refillable.

The haemul pajum – seafood and shallot korean pancake ($20) was one of the nicest pancake I have had. The batter was crunchy and I love the combination of shallots and seafood. The dipping sauce was a wonderful complement.

Dolsot bibim bab – rice topped with vegetables and a choice of beef, chicken, pork, tofu on a hot-pot ($14) and we all opted for the beef. Delicious mix of beef, rice, and vegetables which has been blanched and dressed with olive oil and soy sauce. I love the crunchy, chewy, sticky rice that was stuck at the bottom of the pot.

We ordered the tong kimchi tong ($18), pork belly marinated in wine with whole cabbage kimchee. I love the wine-marinated pork belly, it was incredibly tender, and succulent. I could have easily eaten the whole thing on my own!

We also enjoyed the pork ribs (I can’t for the life of me remember the name of it!), which was barbequed beautifully by my Mum!

F has been raving about the fried chicken here, he claims it is one of the best he has had! Ordered the tang su gi – deep fried chicken in sweet and sour sauce ($26), the chicken had a lovely crunchy batter and succulent chicken. I love the sweet and sour sauce, however, it wasn’t the right one!!!!

SO we ordered another fried chicken, the ‘right’ one, deep-fried chicken in spicy sour sauce ($26) and wow – the crunchiness of the chicken, the spiciness of the sauce exploded in our mouths.

Clearly, we ordered too much, and I took the left over fried chicken in spicy sour sauce and had it for lunch the next day. The prices quite reasonable, and the quantity of the fried chicken was definitely generous! I think the quantity for the barbecued meats could be more, regardless, it was still good.

Service good, and efficient, and I have to say, that chili chicken is definitely worth coming back for – even if its takeaway! Unfortunately they do not take reservations on Friday and Saturday nights, get there early so you won’t have to wait too long!

Hurricane’s Bar and Grill, Top Ryde

This place requires no introduction at all. This is the third Hurricanes restaurant and it is probably the fanciest and biggest one thus far! It is located in the Top Ryde City Shopping Centre, outside in the new area call ‘La Strada’. I have dined at both the Bondi Beach and Darling Harbour restaurant, so when Hurricane’s opened at Top Ryde, we were all keen to try the new branch. The crowds clearly haven’t diminished; it is still as busy as ever. We had reservations at 6pm (it was the only time that they could fit us in!) and by about 7.30pm the place was packed and people queuing and waiting to get in.

The bar is bigger than that of Darling Harbour, the place looks a little fancier but the food is still as good as the other two branches.

We started with the complimentary bread, warm with crusty exterior and soft, fluffy on the inside.

Eaten with my new love of butter brand – luprak! It was delicious, I had to refrain from eating too much bread as I was looking forward to the ribs!

The moment of truth – THREE FULL RACKS of pork ribs ($36 each)!!!! There were 6 of us, so half a rack each.

It was humongous! The ribs were so juicy, and tender – they were finger licking good!

We also got a serving of Mediterranean Salad ($19.00) with kalamata olives, feta cheese, capsicum and our Mediterranean dressing. Chunks of feta cheese, the dressing was scrumptiously good!

I was stuffed, top button of jeans undone, and could not fit any desserts in! I still think it is one of the best pork ribs in Sydney! Although, Cafe Ish’s beef ribs are superbly tender, and succulent and will give Hurricane’s a run for its money. The sauce is just too addictive, I could definitely drink it by the bowl – or maybe not?

Thanks O for the lovely meal! Top Ryde is a whole lot closer for the family than either Bondi or Darlinghurst. Top Ryde Shopping Centre reopened in 2010, it’s not a place I go visit often, but with all the new eateries at ‘La Strada’, and the not-so-new opened cinemas, that’s a good enough reason for me to go back!
