Xingli, Shenzhen, China

‘The Mother’ and I wanted a short getaway, there’s a story to why we ended up at Shenzhen for a day or so but I won’t bore you the details. ‘The Mother’ has never been to Shenzhen and he was curious to see what all the fuss (or lack there off) is about. However, unfortunately, for all of us, we did not leave the Ritz Carlton at all! We were upgraded to the executive suite and it was perfect! GIGANTIC bed – 6 human rolls and there were so many restaurants and amenities that we really didn’t leave at all. Mind you, we were only here for a night so we made full use of the hotels facilities.

One of the restaurants that we ate was Xingli which is located on the 4th floor of the hotel. The restaurant offers ‘the finest in sumptuous Chiu Chow cuisine’ and the menu was vast. We asked for recommendations and it did not disappoint.

Started with the crispy chicken and Dragon did not hesitate to eat majority of it. Crispy skin, the chicken was incredibly tender and tasty that you wanted more.


These triangle shaped tofu was silky smooth and dipped in vinegar were fantastic.


The pork and vegetables were good but nothing special I thought.


Last but not least, fish and tofu hot pot – one of ‘The Mother’s’ favourite dish. The fish was slightly pan fried, and the tofu again silky smooth. He pretty much ate the whole thing himself!


Unfortunately, I was too full to even think about dessert but it did sound good. I have read that the service is appalling but we didn’t have any issues at all – in fact we thought everyone was friendly and very helpful! We and definitely Dragon definitely enjoyed our meal here!

Locofama, Sai Ying Pun, Hong Kong

I have heard wonderful things about Locofama which is situated in Sai Ying Pun just opposite Grassroot Pantry (another place I have been wanting to try but have not!) Locofama serves continental food made with organic vegetables, sustainable seafood and grass-fed meats. It also offers ‘eco friendly home products and organic groceries’.


We came one Sunday afternoon and the place was relatively empty. I knew exactly what I wanted after I had a quick look of the board – 48 hours short ribs (HKD148).


Not what I expected, as I was actually hoping beef ribs with the bone in tact, but instead chunks of beef cut into pieces. The beef were melt-in-your mouth tender, however, serving size was small for the price. I could have definitely had two servings of this on my own!


I couldn’t go past the corn chips with guacamole – you all know my love for avocado! The guacamole didn’t disappoint, and even ‘The Mother’ who doesn’t like avocado can’t help but eat some!


He opt for the beef wrap – ‘it’s ok’ he said. ‘The Mother’ prefers simple food and although Locofama is not fine dining it is a little on the ‘fancy’ side for him. Give him a turkey sandwich with cranberry sauce and he is happy!


The food was fresh and good but a little on the steep side. The juices were awesome though – ordered the beetroot, apple and carrot and that was fantastic! Fresh and perfect for a hot day. Overall, it was ok, food wasn’t mind blowing but happy to come back and give it ago and try their other dishes.

Ciak – in the kitchen, Central, Hong Kong

Ciak – in the kitchen has been opened for a while now, it is located on the 3/F of landmark where three-sixty used to be. Now there’s also Urban Bakery Works, Pret and Ciak which is a casual dining venture by Italian chef Umberto Bombana of three-Michelin-starred 8 1/2 Ozzo e Mezzo.


There are two sections of the restaurant, a walk-in section for buying take away and a restaurant section for eating in. Now the choices for walk-in section is very limited, they have soups, salads, pizzas and desserts on offer which are ordered directly from the counters.

I was here for lunch and opt for the set lunch. I had a quick look at the a-la-carte menu and it was not cheap. 2 courses for HKD268 but the option i have to say was pretty good.

The bread was nicely warm, fresh from the oven


We both started with the mushroom soup – it was deliciously creamy and hearty and a perfect way to start the meal.


I couldn’t go past the char-grilled US sirloin steak with arugula salad. I was a little surprised when it arrived on the table – the serving was TINY but it was excellent. Succulent, tender and cooked to perfection.


R opt for pan-fried salmon, french bean and mashed potato. I am always a little wary about ordering salmon, most of the time it is over cooked but this was perfect, pink on the inside and wasn’t dry. Her gripe was that the same as mine – definitely could have eaten more of it.


Unfortunately I didn’t have time for dessert, however, the chocolate brownie with hazelnut ice cream sounds good. I have always enjoyed at Ozzo, so really enjoyed my meal here, even though I didn’t even try the pizza or pasta – definitely next time!

Wow – it seems so long ago that we were in Prague – almost 3 months ago. Sorry it has taken me this long to post my eats in Prague. To be honest, I wasn’t utterly blown away by the food in Prague, the food was so so. Maybe it was my taste buds, or the fact that I didn’t really research it enough but nothing really wow’ed me unlike in Helsinki!

We arrived late afternoon in Prague. Dragon was still jet lagged so was pretty much asleep as soon as we checked in. We stayed at the Prague city apartments and I have to say, it was one of the nicest apartments I have stayed – it was bigger than our current place in Hong Kong! It was an old building but the inside was beautiful and we truly enjoyed our stay there.

We wandered around town, and stumbled across El Toro Negro – it was packed but thankfully they could fit us in. It is a steak bar and is located in the oldest part of Prague opposite the Old Town astronomical clock.


The menu was vast – diners have the option of choosing a wide range of meats and fish and there were over 120 cocktails on offer! I couldn’t go past the grilled tenderloin pork which was served with chips. The pork was tender and the chips was excellent!


‘The Mother’ couldn’t go past the Argentinean rib-eye steak served with potatoes. The steak was cooked to perfection, medium rare and tender. Rather a small serving but we had our eyes set on desserts at the markets.


We walked around the night markets – it was beautiful and the food looked good, especially the desserts. ‘The Mother’ couldn’t resist these hot donuts and they were excellent when eaten warm, especially in the cold weather.


I couldn’t go past the crepes with nutella and banana – seriously sinful and seriously delicious!


We went to the markets at least 3 times during our stay, we just couldn’t stay away – the desserts and snacks were just too good!

The next morning, we were strolling by and found this cute little cafe – kafka snob food. The cafe was rather cute, I liked the relaxing vibe but the food was a little ordinary I thought.


The scrambled eggs were a little dry for my liking and incredibly salty!


The croissant was delicious – crunchy pastry and soft fluffy on the inside


‘The Mother’ had the muesli, the yogurt was nice and creamy but nothing special I thought.


There was fruit salad also, which was again nice but nothing special – Dragon demolished it. Service was friendly but we didn’t go back for breakfast during our trip. There were better cafe’s I thought.

Made in HK, Kwun Tong

Made in HK can be found in Kwun Tong, in APM, Millennium City 5. I originally wanted to go to MIC KItchen, unfortunately they were fully booked and couldn’t fit us in. Hence dining at Made in HK, which is part of the Drawing Room Concepts and offers diners ‘Hong Kong style Western cuisine with a contemporary touch’ – a fresh play on cha chan teng food.


I absolutely love the interior, the lofty ceilings, the space (!) not a lot of restaurant has this much space, especially in a mall! Set lunches were on offer, either a daily soup or salad and a 6 different meal options. We started with some bread, the sweet kind, which I am not a huge fan off.


The daily soup was cream of corn – it was a little on the watery side, nothing creamy about it.


I opt for the bake rice with pork hamburger steak which was served in a skillet. To be frank, thought it was a bit weird, eating melted cheese and tomato sauce with rice. I liked the pork with cheese and tomato, just not with the rice!


‘The Mother’ couldn’t go past the tuna pasta with garlic and chili. He really enjoyed his meal – pasta was al dente and cooked to perfection.


Breakfast and tea sets are also on offer. I am not sure if I’d make the effort to go back to Made in HK, not unless I was in the area. Service was friendly and food came relatively quickly.
