Ooh Lala @ Pui O beach

The website of Ooh lala boasts that Pui O beach is ‘Thailand 45 minutes from Central’. I have been to Thailand a couple of times now and I have to admit, Pui O is a nice beach, but I would describe it as ‘Thailand’.

I came here one afternoon to meet some cousins, and at first I was a little reluctant to go. I am not good with boats, I get motion sickness, so catching the ferry was out of the question. I was at a friend’s house in Kowloon and it still took me a good 40 minutes to get there. I have to admit though, as much as I was reluctant to go, I am glad I did.

Got to Pui O beach at dusk, and the view, was quite stunning! However, sitting at Oh Lala with a glass of beer or a cocktail really didn’t feel like I was in Hong Kong. It was good to get out of the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong, sit there with a beer, and soak in the view.

Now O0h Lala, it’s a bar / restaurant at Pui O beach, overlooking the beach. I was a little disappointed with the menu, it was very limited and not a lot of variety. There was a lot of seafood, Mediterranean-inspired barbecue fare. I wasn’t too hungry that evening (I had previously a HUGE lunch at a friends place) but managed to try a little bit of Hubby’s fish and chips. The fish was fresh, lightly battered and the chips thinly cut and crispy. It was a lot tastier than I thought.

I was a little disappointed with the venue. The website made it look a lot flashier than it actually is. It’s a casual restaurant, menu limited but great for gathering with family and children. You can even take your dog there for a wander, and let them roam on the beach after 6pm.

My gripe would be getting back to Tung Chung from Pui O. The restaurant is happy to call a taxi for you but still quite a hassle.

  • Take the MTR to Tung Chung.
  • From the Tung Chung bus station, take the 3M or A35 bus. Get off at Pui O Village.
  • Cross the road. Walk down Chi Ma Wan Road. Take a right turn at the small shops.
  • Follow the concrete path across the fields all the way to the beach.

It was great catching up with relatives; the kids enjoyed it, playing in the sand and swimming, whilst the adults were drinking and eating.
